We tell you which courses to skip

A first-season deckhand needs safety training, a powerboat ticket and a clean licence. The offshore skipper course is worth far more after two seasons than before one, and we will say so instead of taking the fee now.

Six to a practical class, not twelve

Boat handling and fire sessions run with six students, sometimes five. Twelve pay the same and cost us nothing extra to teach. You would spend the day standing at the back watching someone else steer.

One re-sit, free, no argument

Fail a practical and you come back on the next course at no cost. That is a seat we could have sold to somebody else, and it is the only reason the assessment means anything at all.

We do not run a placement desk

Nobody here will promise you a job at the end of the week. Schools that do are selling the same hope twice. We will tell you what a first season actually pays and which boats are short-handed in March.
